What lighting does at an event

It sets the room before anyone speaks. At IBX Services' galas at The Eglinton Grand, the same room looked different every year because of the light: a rippling gold texture across the stage wall in 2018, strong red walls and a swirling magenta stage in 2019, and two yellow moons on a field of stars in 2020, with the room blacked out for a troupe of dancers in LED suits.

It makes an entrance. For the OMHA championships at Garnet B. Rickard in Clarington, we built a truss arch on the ice with four moving heads, dimmed the arena and brought each player out through haze into their own spot. At Vantage Venues, two moving heads threw stars and arrows onto the doors to lead guests in.

It carries a brand. Sponsor logos projected in gold onto a stage wall, a client's logo projected onto the outside of the building at Atlantis, Ontario Place, uplighting matched to a company's colours at a golf tournament dinner.

And it can be the show. At a hip-hop concert at Mingles Social Club, moving-head beams, lasers and haze did most of the work.
